# Using a VR headset sitting down: what to check

How seated VR works on Meta Quest, PlayStation VR2 and Apple Vision Pro, what the makers say about play space, and what to check before you buy an app.

Plenty of people use VR from a chair, a sofa or a wheelchair. Whether it works well depends on two things: what the headset supports, and what each app expects of you.

## What the makers say

- **Meta Quest 3 and 3S.** Meta offers a _stationary_ boundary alongside _roomscale_ . Meta’s developer documentation describes stationary as “also known as seated experience”, for smaller spaces and little movement beyond reaching or leaning.
- **PlayStation VR2.** Sony lists three play-area styles: sitting, standing and roomscale. Its sitting and standing areas need at least 1 m × 1 m.
- **Apple Vision Pro.** Apple’s safety guidance covers clearing your space and taking breaks. It doesn’t set out separate seated and standing modes.

## The catch: apps decide too

Everything above is about the headset. Whether a particular game or app works seated is a separate question.

A headset that supports seated use can still run apps designed for someone standing. Some games expect you to crouch, reach the floor or turn right around. Before buying an app, check its store listing for the play modes it supports. Many say _seated_ , _standing_ or _roomscale_ .

## Five things to check before you start

1. **Use a stable chair without wheels** if you can, or lock the wheels.
2. **Clear the area around you** , including within arm’s reach on both sides.
3. **Set the boundary while seated** , so the floor height and play area match how you’ll sit.
4. **Recentre the view** when you sit down, so the picture faces forward.
5. **Take breaks.** Apple suggests a break every 20 to 30 minutes, then adjusting to your comfort.

## Comparing headsets for seated use

Seated support is one of the questions in the [VR Headset Finder](https://vrta.com.au/headsets/finder/?position=seated). It shows what each maker states, links the source, and says when a maker doesn’t say.

## Quick answers

Can you use a VR headset sitting down?

Yes, with conditions. Meta offers a stationary boundary, which its developer documentation calls "also known as seated experience", and Sony lists a sitting play area for PS VR2. Individual apps may still expect you to stand, so check each one.

How much space do I need for seated VR?

Sony says its sitting and standing play areas need at least 1 m × 1 m. Clear the space around your chair either way, including anything you could hit with a hand or controller.
